About the event
Historical maps are fascinating pieces of material culture. If you know how to read them well, it places the world view of the mapmaker, and in extension, the society the mapmaker lived and worked in, in front you.
This workshop led by archaeologist Dr Tathagata Neogi will take you on an exciting journey back in time and space through historic maps in the world. Based on historical examples, you will learn about the methods and processes of mapmaking in the past, and how to rouse your sense of history to read and understand the world view of the societies that produced these maps.
At the end of the workshop you will have a basic understanding of the methods of reading and analyzing historical maps to get more information from them than it meets the eye.
